Everyone is guilty of using antibiotics to fight bacteria. In fact, we often abuse antibiotics or misuse them entirely! One thing is certain, the use of antibiotics has become more of an issue than a solution, resulting in people wanting them to go away, fast!
Antibiotics were first discovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming. During the 20th century, antibiotics helped prevent mortality associated with infectious diseases. Today the situation has changed enormously, the major problem is due to the misuse of antibiotics. Throughout the years, over-consumption has led to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The more antibiotics we take, the less likely the treatment will work. According to a study published in the journal of (which journal) providers in France are still over prescribing antibiotics. Their uses are 50% higher than the OECD average and make it the 8th largest population of consumers in the world. This bacterial resistance has become a global and worrisome phenomenon for the health world, with an estimated 700,000 deaths per year worldwide related to infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In Europe, this represents 25,000 deaths per year, says Inserm.
Prevention & control of antibiotic resistance
The World Health Organization places a high priority on the fight against antibiotic resistance and have even created a national “Action Plan to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance”, which includes antibiotic resistance. They also warn us about the ineffectiveness of antibiotics against viruses, such as influenza or colds. In fact, antibiotics act only in the case of bacteria, and even then, they are not always necessary and usually don’t cure the problem! Providers and research are suggesting the use of Essential Oils to target natural solutions and remedies.
Using essential oils to limit the use of antibiotics
To limit an over consumption of antibiotics, studies are suggesting natural alternatives and methods which can be beneficial to our health. Essential oils are gradually being favored as valid alternatives. Contrary to antibiotics, Essential Oils are effective in fighting against bacteria, but also against viruses. Studies suggest that the use of Essential Oils in therapeutic purposes are effective; they have antiviral and antiseptic properties which allow us to look after ourselves and to remain healthy. Certain essential oils kill bacteria, others prevent them from reproducing, and most tackle both. On the list of Essential Oils that we can use appear the following: Tea Tree, Ravintsara, Niaouli or Oregano … However, it is necessary to be cautious and inquire about the strength of Essential Oils, especially in some cases like allergies, diseases, pregnancy. The good news is that although slowly, this alternative treatment becoming more common and current.
Together we can prevent falling victim of these health concerns and instead use the natural properties of Essential Oils to solve them.
